Starting the season with Wagner is a real event! This opera, co-produced with Madrid's Teatro Real, impressively embodies the composer's visionary lyricism in a futuristic and post-apocalyptic interpretation by German-French director David Hermann.
The opera season gets underway by bringing together four young people. Richard Wagner was 32 when he conducted the world première of Tannhäuser in Dresden. The year was 1845 and it was already his fifth opera.
Franco-German David Hermann, 29, the youngest director to ever work at the Salzburg Festival, here takes his inspiration from the broken world of author Philip K. Dick, made famous in 1982 by Ridley Scott’s cult film Blade Runner. Meanwhile, Daniele Rustioni, 38, takes up his new role as musical director at the Lyon Opera.
And Tannhäuser is the young hero torn between the sensual passion which binds him to the goddess Venus and the divine love he has for the pure and saintly Elisabeth. Three acts of unrelenting intensity that plunge us into a journey through the composer’s obsessions and incredible musical invention, a voyage through his visionary lyricism.
