Born in Herrenberg, Germany, bass-baritone David Rother trained with the Aurelius Sängerknaben children’s choir in Calw. Starting out as a child performer, he sung the part of the First Boy in Die Zauberflöte (Mozart) in Germany and abroad, including at the Staatsoper Berlin, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Paris Opera and the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden. He then trained at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in Markus Eiche’s class; his encounters with artists such as Christa Mayer, Wilhelm Schwinghammer and Diana Damrau had a lasting influence on his musical work. As a student, he played the Herald and Farfarello in The Love for Three Oranges (Prokofiev) at the theater in Koblenz, then took on the role of Blansac in La scala di seta (Rossini) in Besançon, Colline in La Bohème (Puccini) at the Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen, Uberto in La Serva padrona (Pergolesi) at the Staufen Festival in Breisgau, and Collatinus in The Rape of Lucretia (Britten) with the Opera Factory in Freiburg. He also portrayed Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte (Mozart), Maître Corbeau in Le Testament de la tante Caroline (Roussel), Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten) and Alexandre in Alexandre bis (Martinů). He also sung in concerts: Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s The Seasons, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Fauré’s Requiem and Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, and gave recitals, with pianist Klaus Simon, of pieces by Viennese composer Erich J. Wolff. At the Glasperlenspiele Calw 2025 festival, he performed lieder by Franz Schubert and Hildegard Quiel with pianist Christine Rahn.
This season, his parts included that of Maik in Tschick (Ludger Vollmer) at the Rostock Opera House, and the Chemist and Mr Roosevelt in The Bat Bomb (Alexander R. Schweiß) at the Freiburg Opera House.
In 2026, David Rother joined the Lyon Opera Studio, where he will spend two seasons.
