In 1848, the courtesan Marie Duplessis inspired Alexandre Dumas fils to write The Lady of the Camellias. A few years later, Verdi created the character of Violetta Valéry, condemned by the hypocrisy and cynicism of her peers. La Traviata was born.
But the story doesn’t end there. Centuries later, in Traviata – You deserve a better future, Benjamin Lazar, Florent Hubert, and Judith Chemla revive this fighter and reveal the profound relevance of her story today. In this adaptation for a small ensemble of performers, they sing, speak, and act, all in service of emotional truth.
At the forefront is Judith Chemla, a 21st-century Violetta, powerful and ethereal. This piece is a deeply moving immersion into the private life of a woman condemned for wanting to live life on her own terms.
