Mark Ernestus, one of the high priests of German techno, has long been fascinated by Senegal’s mbalax. Ndagga is the result of a North-South/Berlin-Dakar collaboration where young Senegalese musicians embrace a kind of cross-fertilization that steers well clear of World Music clichés without falling into the trap of becoming merely electronica with a hint of exoticism. The dub and electronic influence is very present, but here it is interpreted by a live group, seamlessly adapting African rhythms to synthesized marimbas.
