In 1831, Mendelssohn discovered the songs and dances of the countryside around Rome. He admired the immense heritage of the eternal city. Memories of these months of happiness cast sunlight onto his symphony, completed two years later. Almost half a century on, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is a journey during which ghosts from the past arise: Haydn’s Vienna, songs from the poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn, or folk dances to which the Viennese musician gave a tone of ineffable nostalgia.
