À propos

Midnight in Buenos Aires, El Duende, a mythical character, summons the spirit of María, a singer “born on a day when God was drunk and in a bad mood”. Having become a ghost, María is condemned to wander Buenos Aires at night before reappearing at dawn to give birth to a new María.

Tango allegory
The only opera by the undisputed master of tango and bandoneon, Astor Piazzolla, María de Buenos Aires marks the beginning of a long collaboration with the poet Horacio Ferrer. This example of the Nuevo Tango, completed in 1967, is a hybrid that mixes scholarly writing and popular melodies, jazz, tango and classical music, but also the trivial and the sacred through the figure of ... María, a worker from the suburbs who became a cabaret singer. Somewhere between magical realism and symbolism, the young woman becomes an allegory of the tango and its capacity to reinvent itself. For this collaboration between the Nuits de Fourvière festival- where it will feature - and the Lyon Opera House, Yaron Lifschitz has adapted the opera for 10 acrobats, two dancers, two soloists (instead of the usual three), tango musicians and a string orchestra to create a Borgesian "dream of a tango and tango of a dream."

Why we love it

This tango-opera is a unique opportunity to see the work of Argentinian legend Astor Piazzolla performed at the opera.

Why we love it

The clash between Piazzolla’s melancholy and the verbal fireworks of the poet Horacio Ferrer is marvellous.

Why we love it

Yaron Lifschitz's version gives Maria from Buenos Aires an acrobatic boost.
