Festival: Family Secrets

March 18 to April 7, 2022

The theme of our 2022 festival is family secrets  — how they spread, either intimately or collectively, leaving their mark on both history and current events. Opera, with its blend of words and music, is perhaps the ideal medium to express what is silent and reveal what is hidden, through music, song, cries and whispers. It could be an oppressive secret, a mysterious burden passed down from one generation to the next, as in Franz Schreker’s Irrelohe. It might be the secret existence of a young girl, jealously hidden by a father whose excessive love has tragic consequences, as in Rigoletto. Or the secrets of a family gathered to say goodbye to their dead father, as in Night of Mourning (Trauernacht).
