The Canuts’ Rebellion
Echos de la Fabrique
For two years, the Lyon Opera’s cultural development department worked with Collectif X and Harmonie Communale to put together a team of amateur players and partners from the social and educational fields. In line with the original brief from author François Hien, this team was involved in all aspects of the show’s creation, including carrying out research, attending lectures, taking part in role-play and improvisation before the play was actually written, as well as building the sets (with help from high-school students and friends) and searching for costumes at textile recycling centres ...
In the spring of 2021, François Hien wrote the play, using the research and improvisation material from the workshops, and from April around 60 amateurs joined the professionals on stage to add the final touches. The end result was three performances at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in May.
Additional performances of the show are now scheduled for June 24 and 25, 2022, at the Célestins - Théâtre de Lyon. In the meantime, the troupe will continue with its popular educational work throughout the 2021-2022 season, with professionals and amateurs sharing the fruits of their research and snippets of the creative process with the public at different venues in the Greater Lyon area.
