    Introductory

This young Moroccan musician, daughter of the famous Master Rachid Hamzaoui, began playing the sintir at a very early age and is one of very few, possibly the only woman to master the instrument. Her all-women group, playing on the same stages as their male colleagues, has sparked a small revolution in the world of Moroccan gnawa music. But beyond the novelty of women playing gnawa music, Asmâa and Bnat Timbouktou are worthy heirs to this tradition, dating back to the Hausa and other West African nations, which brings together virtuosity and spirituality. They are part of a new generation of Moroccan musicians who are transforming the genre by adapting it to the concert hall, while remaining faithful to the spirit of this music with its links to healing rituals and worship.
